Warriors Fall to Blades in Opening Weekend Rematch

October 3, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors fell behind early and couldn't close the gap against the Saskatoon Blades, falling 4-2 in the Bridge City, to close out the season-opening home-and-home series.

Daemon Hunt and Jagger Firkus scored for the Warriors in the loss, while Saskatoon product Brett Mirwald t urned away 23 shots in his hometown.

In a flip of Friday night, Saskatoon got an early goal with Trevor Wong burying a rebound in front to open the scoring just 2:07 into the game.

The Blades would take a 2-0 lead in the final minute of the first period when Josh Paulhus scored his first of the season.

The score stayed that way through the second period until Hunt scored his second of the season on a hard shot from the slot. The goal was set up by fellow defenceman Denton Mateychuk on a great end-to-end effort.

Saskatoon would move back in front by two with a shorthanded goal from Tristen Robins with 7:15 gone in the third period.

Firkus responded for the Warriors just over five minutes later with his first of the season.

Despite some late chances, including Brayden Yager hitting a crossbar with a few minutes to play, Saskatoon picked up an empty net goal from Kyle Crnkovic to finish off the win.

The Warriors outshot Saskatoon 34-28 in the loss, but finished 0-for-4 on the power play. Moose Jaw killed off both of Saskatoon's power plays.

The East Division rivals split their opening weekend series.

Moose Jaw returns to the ice on Friday night when they host the Regina Pats at Mosaic Place. Tickets for the game are available here or the Mosaic Place Box Office.
