Warriors Defeat Whalers

The Akwesasne Warriors brought pro hockey back to Cornwall tonight.

A crowd of 1453 people had a chance to enjoy Federal Hockey league action.

The first place Akwesasne Warriors had their chance to pay back the defeat they suffered last weekend in Danbury.

The Warriors were featuring four new players at home tonight.

Dominating play with a strong defense, sharp passing and plenty of scoring opportunities the Warriors easily dispatched the Danbury Whalers by a convincing 5-1 score.

After a scoreless and at times sluggish first period the Warriors poured on the scoring in the second period.

At 1:43 of the second period Akwesasne's Ahmed Mahfouz opened up the scoring with assists going to Dan Sauve and Miguel Delisle. At 5:01 Dan Sauve made it 2-0 with assists going to Dan Tessier and Miguel Delisle.

At 7:25 On his way out of the penalty box Josh Desmarais picked up a breakway pass from Ahmed Mahfouz and went all alone with the Nick Neidert and beat him one on one to make it 3-0 for the Warriors.

The Warriors scored one more goal before the end of the second with an unassisted goal by top Dman in the FHL Carter Trevisani.

The Third period featured some rough stuff Whalers tough guy Corey Fulton squared off with newly acquired Warrior Aaron Naphon. Fulton dominated the bout from start to finish and left Naphan bloodied and in need of repairs. The Whalers ruined the shutout for David Plouffe who has yet to record a shutout this season. Igor Karlov scored the lone goal for the Whalers at the 2:05 mark of the third period. However 40 seconds later Pat Deraspe scored for the Warriors to make it 5-1. The Whalers outshot the Warriors 43-32 Despite being short benched tonight.

The win for the Warriors puts them in sole possession of first place in the Federal Hockey League.
