ALEXANDRIA BAY, NY - Akwesasne Warriors' goalie David Plouffe stopped all 39 shots as his team tied the North Division Final, defeating the 1000 Islands Privateers 6-0 at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center. 1,487 came out to cheer on the Privateers in their first home playoff game.
The first period featured good pace and back-and-forth action. Both the Privateers and Warriors came close multiple times and each successfully killed a penalty. Akwesasne opened the scoresheet after the halfway point of the second period as Darick Ste. Marie fired a shot off the pad of goaltender Rich Sillery and into the net. Joshua Desmarias scored consecutive even-strength goals before the period ended. The Privateers successfully killed a double-minor to Justin Levac but trailed by 3 entering the third period. Ahmed Mafouz made sure there was no repeat of Thursday night's comeback by beating Sillery on a breakaway. Addison Pelkey and Miguel Delisle scored 24 seconds apart near the end of the third period to close the scoring. The Privateers outshot the Warriors 39-33 but Plouffe played a masterful contest, as his defense prevented quality chances and kept rebounds to a minimum. The Privateers had opportunities but couldn't quite get the right combination. Akwesasne's win swings momentum and home-ice advantage.
The Warriors will host Game 3 tomorrow night at 7:30 PM. Game 4 will return the series to the Bonnie Castle Rec Center next Friday, March 4th at 7 PM. If necessary, Game 5 will be Saturday, March 5th at 7:30 PM in Akwesasne.
The 1000 Islands Privateers operate in Alexandria Bay and are a founding franchise in the Federal Hockey League. The Privateers play at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center in Alexandria Bay.
