Newark Bears News Release

(Newark, N.J.) - Daryle Ward put a two-out single into left field to bring home Tim Raines, Jr. in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Newark Bears walked off with a 4-3 win over the York Revolution Saturday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Revolution got on the board in the top of the first inning. Four straight singles off Shane Youman all found right field. Scott Grimes, who had four hits, led off the game with a single to right and came home two batters later former Bear Ramon Castro's RBI single to make it 1-0. The lead grew to two runs as James Shanks followed a Jose Herrera single with a RBI fielder's choice to plate Victor Rodriguez. Grimes extended the lead in the third inning as his 15th round tripper of the season flew deep and high into the 40-foot net in left field and it was 3-0 Revs.

Youman setttled down as he didn't surrender a run over his next four frames and allowed just two more hits. The Bears started their comeback in the home fifth against Celson Polanco. Sandy Madera belted a homer the opposite way to right, his first homer since he returned to the Bears two weeks ago, cutting the lead to 3-1. WIth the game in the hands of the bullpen in the sixth, Newark touch Eric Ackerman for two runs in the home sixth inning, tying the game at 3-3. Raines, Jr. led off the inning with a bunt single and scored on an RBI double by Kennard Jones. After Ward singled, Carl Everett laced a double down the left field line to bring home Jones and the game was tied. The Bears couldn't push ahead, despite loading the bases loaded twice in the inning, one time with no out.

The game remained tied and pushed into extra frames. Newark seemed poised to win it in the bottom of the tenth as they loaded the bases with no out. Reliever Sean Stidfole, though wiggled his way out of the mess with a strikeout, a pop out and an infield grounder to leave the bags full. In the 11th, Raines, Jr. smacked a two-out hustle double to center. After Jones walked, Ward laced his game-winning hit to left, with Raines, Jr. beating the throw at the plate for the win. It was Newark's fourth walk-off win in the month of August and second time Ward won it on the final at-bat.

Matt Smith (7-11) got the win in relief as he worked a scoreless 10th inning. Jason Richardson (3-3), the sixth York hurler, suffered the loss, surrendering two hits, including the game-winner, with a walk and strikeout. Michael Nix provided three scoreless innings in relief, scattering just three hits and stranding Revolution base runners. Youman, who fired seven innings for the third-straight start, allowed three runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts in the no-decision.
