Newark Bears News Release
(Newark, N.J., Aug. 29, 2010) - Eric Munson lifted a pair of two-run homers among his three hits and drove in four runs, keying a long ball barrage, as the Newark Bears trounced the York Revolution 11-6 Sunday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, completing a three-game sweep in the process.
Munson hit his fifth homer of the season in a three-run fifth inning for the Bears, a rally that saw the Bears take the lead for good. Munson's drive the opposite way to left tied the game at 2-2, then Daryle Ward gave the Bears a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly. Newark broke the game wide open scoring seven runs in the home sixth inning. Munson added another two-run blast in the frame, his sixth of the season, hitting a line drive over the right field wall after James Cooper was hit by a pitch, pushing the lead to 5-2. Ward, who had three RBI, plated two with a single that made it 7-2, then Carl Everett blasted a majestic 430-foot three-run homer over the scoreboard in right field, giving the Bears a 10-2 lead. It was Everett's 13th homer of the season.
Newark was held scoreless and scratched just one hit over the first four innings against Julio Manon (0-2). Manny Mejia provided the fourth homer for the Bears and added another run in the seventh, his eighth homer of the year. Kelvin Villa (3-7) was the beneficiary of the home run attack, earning his first win since August 1, a game where the Bears scored 19 runs in a win against Camden. Villa pitched six solid innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits, walking two and striking out six. Nick Renault, Greg Reinhard and Armando Benitez each pitched one inning of relief for the Bears.
The Bears were led by Kennard Jones, who had four hits (all singles) and Munson, who collected three, two homers and a double. Ward and Everett each drove in three runs. York received four hits and three RBI from former Bear Victor Rodriguez, who had a two-run homer that gave the Revolution a brief 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. James Shanks belted two homers, a solo shot in the eighth and a two-run shot in the ninth.
