
War Memorial Named Ninth Best Minor League Venue

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets, and the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters and Syracuse Crunch, announced today that their home arena, the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial, was named the ninth best minor league venue in North America in a recent survey.
The survey was MLN's Vote4TheBest 2009 Awards; an annual competition that allows fans to vote for their favorite minor league arenas and ball parks. The full results of the Vote4TheBest 2009 Awards will be published by MLN Sports in its digital magazine, SZ (www.mlnsportszone.com).
The War Memorial, which made its first appearance on the Vote4TheBest list, was joined by a number of ECHL venues. Stockton Arena (Stockton Thunder) in Stockton, California placed second, The Sovereign Center (Reading Royals) in Reading, Pennsylvania placed third, Rabobank Arena (Bakersfield Condors) in Bakersfield, California came in fourth, Gwinnett Arena (Gwinnett Gladiators) in Gwinnett Georgia finished fifth, Germain Arena (Florida Everblades) in Estero Florida placed sixth, and Sullivan Arena (Alaska Aces) in Anchorage Alaska rounded out the survey in tenth. For the second year in a row Whataburger Field, home of the Corpus Christi Hooks, in Corpus Christi, Texas came in first place.
"We're excited that the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial made its first appearance in the Vote4TheBest Awards. The War Memorial in a historic building with great hockey tradition and, of course, was home to Slap Shot. It's great that our fans appreciate and enjoy the character and history of this building," said Chiefs vice president and general manager Bill Bredin.
