Walleye Notes
Southern swing in Ohio: Toledo hosted a pair of South Division teams during a three in three weekend. After trailing Florida 2-0 early second period Friday night, the Walleye offense exploded out-scoring the Everblades 6-2 the rest of the way Friday night and then putting up 8 Saturday in an 8-2 win. Tylor Spink picked up his first professional hat trick in Saturday's win. In an attempt for a weekend sweep, the Walleye came up just short despite the first professional goal from Alex Globke in a 3-2 shootout loss to Norfolk.
Sellout record reached also: 8,300 in the Huntington Center Saturday night marked the 19th sellout crowd of the year passing last year's record total of 18. The Walleye have four more home contests and are trying to average over 7,000 in a season for the first time (currently 7,084).
Home streaking: Despite the shootout loss Sunday, Toledo still has a home streak going with picking up at least a point in 13 consecutive contests (11-0-2) which the longest such streak in Walleye history. January 24 through March 13, 2016, the Walleye won 13 consecutive (13-0-0) games to set the record.
Berschbach sets another record: Shane Berschbach pushed his season point total to 75 (17G, 58A) by picking up an assist on Simon Denis's first period goal Saturday which set a new single season Walleye record for points (Tyler Barnes 74, 2014-15). He also added another assist on Sunday and has been red hot lately setting a new Walleye record with an eleven game point streak in which he has 18 points (4G, 14A).
Paterson equals a record also: With his 32nd win of the season on Saturday, Jake Paterson has tied Jeff Lerg (14-15) for the most goaltender wins in a single season of Walleye hockey. He has passed Lerg to set records in minutes played (2,680), shutouts (6), and is tied with Jeff for most appearances (45). The Toledo ECHL record for wins in a single season is held by Nick Vitucci with 35 in the 1994-95 season.
Another three game weekend awaits: Friday night the Walleye will play host the Indy Fuel, a team the Walleye have beaten in each of the first two matchups. It's a quick road trip to Cincinnati on Saturday to take on the Cyclones for the final time this year. The Walleye have a 3-1-0 record against its in-state rivals. The weekend concludes Sunday at the Huntington Center against the Fort Wayne Komets. Toledo is 4-0-0 vs. Fort Wayne this year with two matchups remaining.
