Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Walla Walla Sweets continue to add depth to their bullpen as the team announced today the signing of pitchers Joe Arlt and Drew Christina. Arlt, a member of the 2012 Sweets, played for two seasons at Walla Walla Community College before transferring to Central Washington University, and Christina is currently in his second season with the Warriors.
Arlt, a 6-foot 3-inch, 195-pound southpaw, appeared in 19 games for the Sweets last season. He was one of the team's most reliable pitchers, going 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA, striking out 45 batters and walking just 19 in his 58 innings of work. Before joining the Sweets in 2012, Arlt pitched for the WWCC Warriors where he was 4-4 with a 2.43 ERA and one save. Arlt is currently a junior at Central Washington University where he will play for head coach Desi Storey.
"Joe has really developed over the past couple of years and very much came into his own last summer," said manager J.C. Biagi. "He's got three pitches that he throws for strikes and his changeup is probably among the best I've seen."
Drew Christina, a 6-foot 2-inch, 180-pound left-handed pitcher, is a native of Walla Walla and a graduate of Walla Walla High School. As a senior at Wa-Hi Christina was named Big 9 pitcher of the year as well as 4A first team all-state. Last season for the Warriors he was 9-1 with one save and a 2.38 ERA. Drew struck out 75 batters and issued just 27 walks in his 75.1 innings of work. In 2012 he was named second team All-Northwest Athletic Associate of Community Colleges as a pitcher.
"Drew will be at the top of the community college's rotation this spring and will have some opportunities to move on to a quality four year program," added Biagi. "He has a ton of potential and we're looking forward to helping him reach that."
Arlt and the Central Washington Wildcats will start their season with a double header on February 3 against Cal State East Bay, and the Warriors open their 2013 season at home in early March. The fourth season of Sweets baseball will start in June of 2013 and season tickets are on sale now. For more information on tickets call 509.522.BALL or visit us online at wallawallasweets.com .
