July 26, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
For the fifth series in a row, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans came out on the wrong end of an opening game as the Augusta GreenJackets won 5-4 on Tuesday night. The Pelicans' third loss in four games dropped them to 60-31 on the season and 13-12 in the second half. The GreenJackets improved to 45-44 and 9-14 in the second half with the win.
After Sunday's shutout, the Pelicans were held to just four hits but turned that into four runs. Felix Stevens (2-2, 2 RBI, 2 BB) reached base in all four plate appearances while driving in two runs. Josue Huma (1-5, RBI) and Alejandro Rivero (0-2, RBI) accounted for the other two runs.
Three Myrtle Beach pitchers combined to walk 11 batters as reliever Yovanny Cabrera (1-2) took the loss with four earned runs in his three innings. Cabrera walked four and gave up two hits in his outing with three strikeouts. In his first start of the season, Luis Rodriguez allowed an earned run through his three innings with two hits and four walks to go with five strikeouts.
Augusta showed their power with Adam Zebrowski (1-3, HR, 3 RBI, BB) delivering a big blow on a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Stephen Paolini (1-3, 2B, RBI, BB) also knocked in a run to help the winning effort. The GreenJackets stranded 12 runners on base and went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Tuesday's win went to starter Samuel Strickland (3-1) as he allowed just one earned run through five innings of work off one hit and three walks while striking out five. Tyler Owens earned the save by retiring the final two batters.
Myrtle Beach scored first in the contest with a run in the top of the second. With Ezequiel Pagan on second, Stevens lined a single up the middle to score a run and put the Birds up early.
Augusta matched that score in their half of the third. With two outs and runners on second and third, Paolini brought home Francisco Floyd on a sacrifice fly to left field that tied the game at one.
Zebrowski came up with the clutch hit in the bottom of the fifth. After Brandon Parker doubled and Paolini walked with one out, Zebrowski lifted his eighth home run of the year over the right-center field wall to put the GreenJackets in front 4-1.
Two runs by the Pelicans in the top of the seventh would inch them closer. Rivero brought in a run on a sacrifice fly with runners on second and third for the second out of the inning. Huma followed with a single to drive in another run and shrink the Augusta lead to 4-3.
The GreenJackets loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with nobody out before Gregori Montano retired the next two batters. With two outs, Montano balked in a run as Augusta extended their lead to 5-3.
The Pelicans made one last charge in the top of the ninth as Matt Warkentin led off with a double to left field. Stevens came up with one out and grounded a single to right field to score Warkentin and bring the tying run to the plate. Owens came out of the bullpen and retired the following two batters to end the game.
Game two of the series between Myrtle Beach and Augusta will be played on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
