Walks Fuel Steamers in Win against Wilson

July 25, 2017 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

The Edenton Steamers (25-19, 8-8) used 10 walks in the contest to pick up a 9-6 win over the Wilson Tobs (13-30, 4-11).

The Tobs took their first and only lead of the game in the first inning when they brought home a run on an error by the Steamers. The Clams responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of RBIs. Billy Wilson brought home a run on an infield single, and Lucas Martinez gave Edenton another run after he walked with the bases loaded.

Andre Nebe tied the game up at 2-2 for the Tobs with a solo home run during his first plate appearance in the third inning. This was one of the few earned runs given up by Steamers' starter John Arel, who had a season-high eight strikeouts. After the Steamers stranded more runners in the third, the bats came alive.

James Battley hit a two-run homer to give the Steamers the 4-2 lead. Billy Wilson followed with a solo home run to go back-to-back for Edenton.

After Hunter Gore scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3, Edenton answered when William Robbins hit a solo home run to make it 6-3 in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Wilson came back with a strong inning off Andrew McDonald in the eighth. After two strong innings, McDonald gave up three runs on four hits to allow the Tobs to tie the game at 6-6 in the inning.

However, the Tobs pitching staff had a rough bottom half of the frame to help the Steamers. Dom Cuevas led off the inning with a single. Edenton followed that up with five walks to bring home three runs. Wilson went through three different pitchers, including shortstop Austin Fisher, to get out of the inning.

Kelvan Pilot came in to shut it down in the ninth for the Clams. Pilot stranded a runner at second to pick up his second save of the season. Andrew McDonald (5-3) got the win for the Steamers while Cole Hinnant (0-4) added another loss to his resume for Wilson.

The Teal and Black will have an off day on Tuesday before heading back to Wilson for a game with the Tobs for the third straight time on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
