Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
The Blue Wahoos added veteran catcher Matt Kennelly today. Kennelly, 24, has spent his first six minor league seasons as part of the Atlanta Braves system. He was recently released by the Braves on May 14 after appearing in five games with Triple-A Gwinnett. He missed the first month of the season after being hit by a pitch during spring training. In the five games with the G-Braves, he hit .417 (5-for-12) with a homer and 5 RBI.
Kennelly, a native of East Fremantle, Western Australia, was signed by the Braves as a non-drafted free agent in 2005 at the age of 16. He started his pro career with the GCL Braves in 2007, advancing as high as Gwinnett in 2011 and 2013. He has played in the Southern League in each of the last two season with Mississippi, compiling a .258 average with 3 HR and 50 RBI in 136 Double-A games.
In a corresponding move, catcher Danny Vicioso has been transferred to High-A Bakersfield. Vicioso hit .164 with a homer and 3 RBI in 18 games with Pensacola while serving as the backup catcher.
