
Wagner named Ironman of the Week

SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 9, 2002) â San Jose SaberCats WR/DB Barry Wagner was today named the Arena Football League's Ironman of the Week after his performance in a 52-41 win over the Indiana Firebirds on Friday July 5. It is the second Ironman of the Week award this season for Wagner and a record setting 36th time he has earned league-wide weekly honors in his career.
Wagner (6-3, 215, Alabama A&M), a 10-year AFL veteran, helped lead the SaberCats to their league record 12th straight victory to start a season by scoring three touchdowns and recording an interception in San Jose's win over Indiana. The victory moved the SaberCats two wins from a perfect regular season.
Already the league's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, Wagner scored twice and gained six yards on his only two carries of the game. He also added a team-high 82 receiving yards and a score on six receptions and tallied his 40th career interception.
The six-time Ironman of the Year award winner currently leads his team in rushing touchdowns (10) and is second in receptions (67), receiving yards (774), and interceptions (3).
The six-time AFL Ironman of the Year earned was named Ironman of the Week following Week 8 of the season and joins teammates OL/DL Joe Jacobs, FB/LB Bob McMillen and OL/DL Sam Hernandez as league weekly award winners this season.
The SaberCats look for their 13th consecutive win of the year when they travel to Arizona to battle the Rattlers on Friday, July 12. The game will be televised live in the Bay Area on KBWB (WB20) at 7:00 p.m.
