AFL I Arena Football League (1987-2008)

Bonner Takes Honors Again

July 9, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

Arizona Rattlers QB SHERDRICK BONNER, Georgia Force DS RON CARPENTER, and San Jose SaberCats WR/DB BARRY WAGNER have been named the Arena Football League's Offensive Player, "ADT" Defensive Player, and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for their performances during Week 12 of the 2002 season.

Bonner (6-4, 240, Cal St.-Northridge), an eight-year AFL veteran, led his Rattlers (9-3) by connecting on 26-of-39 for 245 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions in their 52-46 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Avengers. Bonner's five-yard touchdown run in overtime gave the Rattlers an important victory towards securing the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. This marks the second consecutive week and third time this season that the former All-Arena performer has earned a league weekly honor. Currently, Bonner's 436 career-passing touchdowns trails only Dallas' ANDY KELLY (450) on the all-time list. Bonner has thrown for 59 touchdowns, while completing 62.1 percent of his passes this season. This marks the ninth time that Bonner was won a weekly award in his career.

Carpenter [6-1, 195, Miami (OH)], a three-year AFL defensive specialist and former Super Bowl champ, earned the weekly award by recording two solo tackles, two interceptions, three pass breakups to help lift the Force (5-7) to a 54-33 victory over the Buffalo Destroyers. The former Red Hawk is currently second on the team with 54.0 total tackles, and tied for the team lead with six interceptions and 14 pass breakups. This award marks the second time this season and second time in his career that Carpenter has garnered league-wide weekly recognition.

Wagner (6-3, 215, Alabama A&M), a 10-year AFL veteran, led the SaberCats (12-0) by hauling in six receptions for 82 yards, six rushing yards, two rushing and one receiving touchdown in their 55-45 victory over the Indiana Firebirds. On the defensive side, Wagner recorded an interception to set the tone early in the game and seal Ironman of the Game honors. The victory set an AFL record for wins to start a season (12) and moved the SaberCats two wins from a perfect regular season. The six-time Ironman of the Year award winner currently leads his team in rushing touchdowns (10) and second in receptions (67), receiving yards (774), and interceptions (3). The perennial Ironman of the Year candidate has earned league-wide weekly honors a record-setting 36th time in his career.

"BUILT FORD TOUGH" WINNERS

------------------------------

Los Angeles coaches selected FB/LB RON PUGGI as one of last week's "Built Ford Tough" Players of the Game. The "Built Ford Tough" Award is a national recognition award given after every game to the player or players on each team best demonstrating determination and toughness in that game. The award honors the players who made a game-saving tackle or score-saving tackle, threw a key block on the big play or exhibited physical sacrifice or consistent tough blocking and tackling on either side of the ball. RON PUGGI forced a fumble on a pass from Arizona QB SHERDRICK BONNER to WR/DB MAURICE BRYANT, which led to an Avenger drive to tie the score at 46-46. Up to five players who display the "get-it-done" kind of attitude are honored by each team every week. A point system is maintained on the league's official site, www.arenafootball.com, throughout the season that will culminate in the "Built Ford Tough" Man of the Year, a player who will win a Ford Truck at the end of the season.
