SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 12, 2002) ¬" San Jose SaberCats WR/DB Barry Wagner was named the Arena Football League ¬â¢s Ironman of the Week after his performance against the Los Angeles Avengers on Saturday June 8th.
Wagner (6-3, 215, Alabama A&M) scored four touchdowns in San Jose ¬â¢s 52-33 win at Los Angeles, tying a team single-game record with three rushing touchdowns and adding a fourth on a 19-yard interception return. He also hauled in seven receptions for 86 yards and added three solo tackles and two pass breakups as the SaberCats remained undefeated on the season with their 8th straight win.
The fourth quarter interception was the 38th of Wagner ¬â¢s career, moving him past Tracey Perkins into sole possession of 2nd place on the league ¬â¢s career list.
The six-time AFL Ironman of the Year earned league weekly honors for a record 35th time in his illustrious career and joined teammates Bob McMillen and Sam Hernandez as league weekly award winners this season.
San Jose also activated WR/LB James Roe from the injured reserve list. Roe, who set a team record with 28 touchdown catches last season, played in two games before being sidelined with a shoulder injury. Rookie Travis Seaton was placed on IR to open up the roster spot.
The SaberCats look for their 9th consecutive win of the year when they host the Chicago Rush on Saturday, June 15, at Compaq Center. Tickets are available and can be purchased at all Northern California TicketMaster locations or at the Compaq Center ticket office.
