Pittsfield Suns News Release
The Pittsfield Suns (7-6) recorded their seventh victory of the season against the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs Friday evening at Wahconah Park. Michael Valentin, Jr. went 4-5 with four RBIs to lift the Suns over the Dawgs 6-5.
The scoring began for the Suns in the third inning. After a lead off single by Dan Donahue, Valentin (4) would smack a triple to plate the first run. Edgar Montes (4) followed Valentin with a RBI-double. The hitting continued when Jeff McGary and Derek Gardella (9) hit back to back singles to score Montes from third, making the score 3-0.
The Suns would add an additional two runs in the fourth inning. Tad Martin doubled to get the inning started and was later brought home after a second RBI hit (single) from Valentin. He would come around to score his second run of the night after a single by Montes and a two hit batsmen to extend Pittsfield's lead to 5-0.
The final Suns run of the night came in the eighth, yet again, off the bat of Valentin who doubled and scored after a sacrifice by Montes and a wild pitch.
Wachusett made things exciting, scoring three runs in the sixth and two in the ninth, highlighted by a monster three-run homerun by Joe Breen (10) in the sixth inning. They would creep even closer in the ninth, scoring two, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Suns by a final tally of 6-5.
Jamin McCann (2-0), would get the win for the Suns after a strong pitching performance, going seven innings and relinquishing six hits, three runs, only one walk, while striking out four. Conner Smith would leave the game after three and two thirds innings, giving up 13 hits and five runs. He was charged with the loss.
The Suns are back in action at Wahconah Park on Tuesday, June 24th. The 2013 World Series Trophy will be on premises. Fans are encouraged to come early for photo opportunities, and pregame festivities. For tickets visit pittsfieldsuns.com or call (413)445-SUNS.
