Great Falls Voyagers News Release
After missing out on the Pioneer League postseason last year, the Voyagers are back following a second-half division-clinching 4-2 victory over Billings Friday night at Dehler Park.
With the two-game sweep, Great Falls (23-9, 44-26) has won 12 in a row and five consecutive road games. Billings (15-17, 38-32) has lost six in a row overall to tie a season high, and six in a row at home. The Voyagers have secured a playoff spot for the ninth time in the last ten seasons. They will open up the best-of-three first round series at home Friday night against Billings.
The Mustangs took an early lead with a first-inning run. T.J. Friedl opened the frame with a base hit to center. He moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt at first. Taylor Trammel drove in Friedl with a ground out to first. The Voyagers responded with a run in the second to tie it. With one out, Anthony Villa reached as the second baseman booted a routine ground ball. A two-out RBI double up the third base line from Carlos Perez leveled the game.
Great Falls took its first lead of the night with a mark in the fourth. Jameson Fisher coaxed a lead-off walk. Fisher then stole second and moved to third after the catcher's throw sailed into center. Anthony Villa made it 2-1 with an RBI ground out to third. Billings bounced back to tie the contest with a fifth-inning tally. Alejo Lopez singled to left and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. A two-out single to left by Satchel McElroy scored the equalizer.
The Voyagers reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Jameson Fisher started a two-out rally with a single to center. Anthony Villa followed with a base hit to right. After a pop-up in foul territory was dropped by the first baseman, Sam Dexter singled on a liner into left that scored Fisher with the go-ahead run. Great Falls added another run in the seventh for a 4-2 cushion. Billings threatened in the ninth but left the bases loaded as T.J. Friedl struck out looking to finish it.
On the mound, Chris Comito posted the win with his third consecutive quality start and seventh of the season. Comito (7-1) lasted seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits with a season-high tying nine strikeouts and no walks. Alfredo Mena took the loss in relief for Billings. Mena (3-3) worked two innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk. Jake Elliott registered his second save of the season. Elliott pitched the final two innings and struck out five with two walks and a hit batter.
The Voyagers outhit the Mustangs 7-to-6. Each side committed three errors in the game. Mitch Roman went 2-for-4 for Great Falls to extend his hitting streak to a personal-best 11. Jameson Fisher scored two runs. Aaron Schnurbusch walked three times. T.J. Friedl and Alejo Lopez each collected two hits in defeat.
