In their continuing efforts to build a strong defensive line, the New Orleans VooDoo have signed DL Melvin Williams, it was announced by the team today.

Williams (6-2, 269, Kansas State) comes to the VooDoo following a two-year NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins. Williams was originally selected by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. In his rookie season with the Saints, Williams immediately played a role in the team's defensive line rotation as he appeared in 14 games with two starts, finishing with 15 tackles (12 solo), a pass defense and fumble recovery. Williams spent parts of the 2004 season with the Saints, the 49ers and the Dolphins. He appeared in three games with the 49ers and registered four solo tackles and two passes defensed. Williams attended training camp with the Washington Redskins in 2005

Williams finished his college career at Kansas State with 70 tackles (40 solo), 13.5 sacks, eight passes defensed and four forced fumbles in 37 career games. As a senior in 2002, he started all 13 games at defensive end and enjoyed his most productive season with 37 tackles, five sacks, three passes defensed and a forced fumble.

"We consider building our line to be a priority as the ability to rush the passer is at a premium in our league," said VooDoo coach Mike Neu. "We are excited about Melvin's abilities as a pass rusher and he will have an excellent opportunity to make an impact for us on the line. During his time with the Saints, we had a chance to see his abilities, outstanding character and work ethic up front as a staff."
