Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Destroyers have announced coaching changes for the upcoming 2007 Arena Football League Season. Former Austin Wranglers head coach Skip Foster, Dallas Desperados special teams coach Mitch Matuska and Destroyers defensive specialist Cecil Doggette join returning special teams coach Ken Matous and line coach Jim Lachey on Head Coach Doug Kay's staff this season.
Foster (Missouri Western State - 1983) joins the Destroyers as offensive coordinator after leading the Austin Wranglers to their first ever AFL playoff appearance last season. He was the field general for the Wranglers for three seasons (2004-06) and led the expansion franchise to a 24-24 record, including a 10-6 mark in 2006. The Coffeyville, Kan. native boasts 23 years of coaching experience, including six in the arena leagues. He led the Tulsa Talons of arenafootball2 to an overall record of 44-10 from 2001-2003. The Talons won the ArenaCup in 2003 under his guidance.
Matuska (Rocky Mountain - 1991) will serve as a defensive assistant coach for the Destroyers after spending two seasons as the Dallas Desperados special teams coach. Before coming to Dallas, he spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Storm as line coach and special teams coach. Through the 2003 and 2004 seasons, Matuska served as the Storm's director of player personnel, working to secure the talent to bring the Storm an ArenaBowl XVII championship in 2003. Prior to joining the Storm's staff, he served as FB/LB coach and special teams coordinator for the Grand Rapids Rampage in 2000.
Doggette (West Virginia - 1991) will serve as a defensive assistant coach in 2007. Following a 12-year AFL career, he is the league's all-time leader in pass breakups with 155. He also recorded 566.5 tackles (478 UT - 177 AT), 29 interceptions, 13 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries while playing for the Detroit Drive (1993), Arizona Rattlers (1995, 1997-2002), Grand Rapids Rampage (2003-05) and Destroyers (2006). In 1997, as a member of the Arizona Rattlers, he led a defense that won ArenaBowl XI over the Iowa Barnstormers and quarterback Kurt Warner.
WE BELIEVE that you can never get enough football. The Destroyers home schedule kicks off on March 24 against the defending ArenaBowl champion Chicago Rush.
