The VooDoo signed WR/DB Denario Smalls off of the practice squad in order to fill a void at WR/DB due to injuries to Luke Leverson and Kerry Hayes. In order to add Smalls to the 24-man roster, the team placed Hayes on the injured reserve list with a lower abdominal injury.
Smalls (5-9, 185, East Tennessee State) played for VooDoo defensive coordinator Kevin Porter with the af2 Macon Knights from 2001-03, where he racked up 223 tackles, 23 interceptions, 74 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Smalls participated in training camp for the San Jose SaberCats in 2002 and has served as the defensive backs coach for Pikeville (Ky.) College the past two seasons.
