May 14, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New Orleans VooDoo News Release
As the New Orleans VooDoo prepare for their key Arena Football League game with the Georgia Force tomorrow night (7 pm CT; Cox Sports TV, WSMB 1350-AM) in the New Orleans Arena, the team announced several roster moves, including the signing of a proven AFL lineman - OL/DL Henry Taylor. To make room for Taylor on the 24-man active roster, the club released WR/DB Luke Leverson. The VooDoo also signed QB Jermaine Alfred from the practice squad and placed QB John Rayborn on injured reserve.
Taylor (6-2, 300, South Carolina) appeared in 13 games for the Dallas Desperados, recording 19.5 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for a loss and three receptions for 41 yards. He completed his first season with the Desperados in 2003 and recorded 7.5 tackles, two sacks, 1.5 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 12 games. Prior to joining the Desperados, Taylor had a four-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. Taylor played collegiately at South Carolina from 1994-97 and was a three-year starter on the defensive line for the Gamecocks.
Alfred (6-1, 220, Baylor) spent the first 10 games of the season as starting QB John Fitzgerald's backup, a role which he will now reprise starting tomorrow night against the Force.
Rayborn, who suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon in the third quarter of last Sunday's game against the Orlando Predators, underwent surgery on Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the season.
With a victory Saturday night vs. the Force, The VooDoo would secure an AFL playoff berth in the franchise's first season in the league and become the first AFL expansion team to win 10 games in its' inaugural season.
Following Saturday's game, the VooDoo return to action next Sunday (May 23) at the defending ArenaBowl champion Tampa Bay Storm (2 pm CT). The VooDoo-Storm game in the St. Petersburg Times Forum will be broadcast on NBC.
