Visalia Oaks Game Notes

August 18, 2008 - California League (CalL1)
Visalia Rawhide News Release

Quick Hits: „P With 15 games to play, the Oaks are 4.0 back of Modesto for the final playoff spot. „P Visalia is 4-0 so far in this 6-game homestand, sweeping High Desert, and taking the opener from San Jose last night. In the process, the Oaks logged their first series sweep in 4 months, and dealt the Giants¡¦ Kevin Pucetas his first loss all season (10-1). „P The Oaks are 16-22 in game ones. They are now 18-19 in game twos, 17-19 in third games, and 8-6 in 4-game series finales.

Top of the Order to You: After going ice cold on the recent journey through San Jose, the top of the Oaks lineup has caught fire, and has been white hot on the homestand. Evan Frey and Mark Hallberg, the 1 and 2 hitters for the Oaks, have combined for 17 hits in their last 4 games. Frey has gone a tremendous 8-for-17, scoring 5 times, and driving in 3 (including a walk-off single in the finale versus High Desert). Not to be outdone, Hallberg is 9-for-13 since Visalia¡¦s return home, with 3 walks (an OBP of .750), 6 runs scored and 5 batted in.

Calling Lemony Snicket: Against High Desert, the Oaks clinched their first series win in 9 series by sweeping them out of town. Their last series victory came July 16-18 in Stockton. Despite their struggles, the Oaks still find themselves in playoff contention. A victory tonight or tomorrow would secure back-to-back triumphant series for the first time since May 9-14.

Now Pitching: Chad Beck takes the mound for the Oaks. Chad Beck has now strung together 3 consecutive dominant outings. Over that stretch, Chad is 2-0, and has allowed just a single earned run in each game. He has fanned 27 in 21.0 innings, and has allowed a total of 15 baserunners (10 hits, 3 walks, 2 hbp). The big righty started both games the Oaks won on their most recent road trip, and will look to continue his excellent run tonight. Meanwhile, right-hander Waldis Joaquin takes the ball for San Jose. This will be the 2nd start and 7th appearance for the Dominican native. Joaquin has held opponents to a miniscule .171 average since his call-up from Low-A Augusta. He is not normally a starter, however, so the Oaks will look to take advantage of his inexperience.
