Vipers' Franchise Face Returns

The Calgary Vipers have re-signed "franchise player" Drew Miller for the upcoming 2011 season. The Medicine Hat, Alberta native is the only player in franchise history who has been on the roster for every single Vipers' game since the inaugural season back in 2005. Starting his tenth professional season and seventh with the Snakes Miller is coming off his best statistical season in 2010 as he led the Golden Baseball League in: runs batted in (94), doubles (28), extra-base hits (51), total bases (211), hit by pitches (17), and games played (88). He also finished second in both home runs (21) and hits (116) along with finishing third in slugging percentage (.641). The Canadian was named G.B.L. Player of the Month for August and also set new single-season franchise records for home runs, runs batted in, and extra-base hits.

The 31-year-old holds several franchise career records including: games played (520), hits (598), runs scored (384), home runs (67), runs batted in (365), walks (274), and hit by pitch (103). The left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing, left fielder also set a consecutive games played record when he started 329 straight games from 2005 through 2008.

In 2009 Drew was named a Golden Baseball League All-Star and led Calgary to their first ever professional baseball championship with a .355 batting average, a .472 on-base percentage, seven runs scored, six runs batted in, and also six walks in eight playoff games. During the regular season he finished 2nd in the league in both on-base percentage (.467) and hit by pitches (17), 3rd in doubles (28), 4th in both batting average (.364) and slugging percentage (.593), 7th in both home runs (11) and runs scored (71), and also 9th in hits (100). On June 2, 2009 he was named G.B.L. Player of the Week thanks to hitting .450 in ten games with four home runs, 16 runs scored, and 13 runs batted in.

The 6'1", 240 pounder also had a terrific 2008 where he was also named a G.B.L. All-Star, finished 1st in the league in both hit by pitches (17) and outfielders fielding percentage (.991), 3rd in slugging percentage (.653), and 4th in home runs (19).

In 2007 Miller was a Northern League All-Star and in 2006 he was named the Vipers' Most Outstanding Player.

This past offseason Drew stayed in Calgary and taught baseball to youngsters.

Spring Training for the team will be held at the preseason home of the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale, Arizona at Scottsdale Stadium starting on Saturday May 14th.

Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.

The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
