Vipers End Home Stand with Win over Birmingham

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (8-0) remain undefeated after a 101-89 win over Birmingham Squadron (2-4) on Sunday evening.

The Vipers managed to earn an early lead over the Squadron in the first frame of the matchup 21-20. Jared Harper paved the way for the game with seven points while Mfiondu Kabengele totaled six points and three rebounds.

RGV continued to lead heading into the half 46-39. Houston Rockets assignee Usman Garuba racked up eight rebounds.

In the third quarter the Vipers had the biggest lead in the game of 17 points over the Squadron to finish the frame 79-65. Trevelin Queen recorded a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds while also dishing out three assists and three steals. For Birmingham, Harper led with 12 points while contributing four assists and three steals.

At the 1:01 mark, Rockets assignee Josh Christopher from off the glass made a dunk assisted by Christian Vital. With 3.9 left, Christopher had another dunk off a Rockets two-way Daishen Nix steal.

The Squadron outscored the Vipers in the final quarter of the game 24-22 but wasn't enough. RGV had the biggest lead with 21 points over Birmingham despite trailing for the quarter. With a couple team plays that kept the lead for RGV, Christopher had another dunk assisted by Anthony Lamb. At 3:53 left, Queen slammed it home with another drunk to follow up with a steal and alley oop layup.

Both Queen and Rockets assignee Josh Christopher had a game-high of 22 points each. Queen capped it off with 11 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Christopher tallied six boards, four assists and two steals. Kabengele fell short of his double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds while also totaling three blocks. From off the bench, Marcus Foster totaled 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

For the visitors, Malcolm Hill had a team-high of 21 points, six rebounds, three assists. Zylan Cheatham recorded a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds while dishing out two assists and two steals. John Petty Jr. came off the bench to contribute 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
