Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - With the score tied at six in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Edmonton Capitals used two singles and a Calgary throwing error to defeat the Vipers, 7-6. The game was back-and-forth throughout until the walk-off run scored by Darryl Brinkley on a play in which Chad Ehrnsberger hit a groundball back to Viper reliever Pete Sikaras. Sikaras (2-1, 5.06 ERA) cost his team the game when he threw the ball into centerfield attempting to start a double-play.

Capitals reliever Todd Privett (3-2, 3.00 ERA) received the win after holding Calgary scoreless for the final two innings of the game. Privett allowed no hits during his two innings of work and struck out three Viper batters. Chris Little started for the Caps and threw a solid six innings. Little allowed just three runs on seven hits and struck out two.

The usual suspects led the Capitals offensively as Joey Gomes went 4-5 with 2RBI and Jorge Cortes was a perfect 2-2 with two walks on the afternoon. Gomes also had a pair of doubles to lead both clubs in extra base hits. Chad Ehrnsberger, John Pasieka and Mitch Graham also clubbed doubles of their own. Gomes was also active on the base paths with a stolen base.

The Capitals will be off for the weekend now as the Tijuana games were cancelled due to the H1N1 Virus precautions prior to the start of the season. The next action for the Capitals will be in Calgary against the Vipers for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. The clubs will then return to TELUS Field on Friday, August 28 for the final three games of the Battle of Alberta.

Tickets for all Caps home games are available at the Capitals TELUS Field Box Office, any TicketMaster location, by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625) or by visiting CapsBaseball.ca.
