Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Capitals took the field on Wednesday evening in front of a good crowd of about 3,500, but again had trouble closing out a game against Calgary. With Jose Lima pitching, the Capitals jumped to an early 4-1 lead through four innings. Lima lasted eight complete but it was the ninth in which Calgary did most of the damage with a four-run inning to jump ahead 8-6. A Caps comeback rally in the bottom of the ninth again fell just short as the Vipers took the third straight game in the series with an 8-7 score.

The Calgary ninth inning started with a Rick Guarno lead-off single followed by a Raul Gonzalez double. After a Caps closer Jason Pearson recorded a strikeout and a pop-out, Viper lead-off batter Fehlandt Lentini was intentionally walked. Calgary's Nelson Castro took full advantage of the bases loaded situation by hitting a 3-RBI triple to put the Vipers ahead. Sergio Pedroza then doubled in Castro for what would prove to be the winning run. Pearson (1-4, 3.47 ERA) took the loss.

The Capitals were again led offensively by lead-off batter Jorge Cortes. Cortes finished the game 2-5 with 3-RBI, two runs scored and a two-run home run that temporarily put the Caps up 6-4 after the seventh inning. Caps leftfielder Mark Okano also had a pair of hits and an RBI and run scored. Third baseman Chad Ehrnsberger drove in two runs on the evening.

The Capitals will send Chris Little to the mound against the Vipers this afternoon in the get-away day game. Fans arriving at Thursday's 12:00pm game wearing a bikini top will have their ticket covered by Terry, Bill & Steve of K-97 - Edmonton's Classic Rock. Sample bottles of sunscreen will also be given out courtesy of Rexall.

Tickets for all Caps home games are available at the Capitals TELUS Field Box Office, any TicketMaster location, by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625) or by visiting CapsBaseball.ca.
