ASHEVILLE, NC-- One of the many attractions of this year's South Atlantic League All-Star Game presented by Ingles is the Home Trust Home Run Derby. Headlining the long-ball event will be former Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves slugger Vinny Castilla; who will be hitting along-side the top Home Run hitters in the South Atlantic League during the event. The two-time MLB All-Star began his time in the major leagues with the Braves, before exploding onto the scene with the Rockies in the mid 90's.
Castilla, who will be coaching first base during the game, finished his Major League career with 320 Home Runs, 1,105 RBI and nearly 1,900 hits. He led the National League in RBI in 2004 with 131. From 1995-99, the Oaxaca, Mexico native combined to hit 191 Home Runs and drive in 562 runs with the Rockies. That string of five-straight 30-homer campaigns still ranks as the third-most ever by a third baseman.
In 1998, Castilla finished 11th in the MVP race while recording career highs in Home Runs (46), RBI (144), and Games Played (162). He is the only Rockies player to start all 162 games in a single season. Currently, Castilla resides in Littleton, Colorado and serves as the Colorado Rockies Special Assistant to the General Manager.
During the 2015 Hall of Fame Baseball Classic on May 23 in Cooperstown, New York, Castilla took part in the Home Run Derby event with five additional Major Leaguers; Aaron Rowand, Kerry Robinson, Rick Ankiel, David Dellucci and former Asheville Tourist Bobby Abreu. Castilla won the event with six Home Runs in 12 at bats.
This year's South Atlantic League Home Trust Home Run Derby will begin at 5:30pm on Tuesday, June 23. A ticket to the All-Star game presented by Ingles grants fans access to the ballpark when the gates open at 3:00pm.
For each Home Run hit during the derby, Home Trust Bank will donate $100 to Children First/Communities in Schools Charity. They will donate $200 for each Home Run Vinny Castilla hits.
