Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Yard Dawgz traveled to American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX last Friday night to take on the Dallas Vigilantes in front of an announced crowd of 7,051. Saturday night marked the Vigilante home opener as well as their first win in franchise history.
The Vigilantes offense came out on a mission in the first quarter. Their first touchdown of the night came off of a 9 yard pass from Vigilante quarterback Collin Drafts to wide receiver Larry Brackins. The Dallas defense stopped the Yard Dawgz offense on their first possession giving the ball back to the Vigilante offense. Dallas fullback Josh White ran the ball in from the 4 yard line to put the Vigilantes up by 13. As the first quarter was coming to an end, the Dawgz tried to get on the board with a field goal but it fell short of the nets and was returned by Kenny Henderson for a Vigilante touchdown. The quarter closed with the Vigilantes up 20-0 over the Dawgz.
While the Vigilantes dominated the first quarter, the second quarter began with the Dawgz scoring 21 unanswered points. Dawgz wide receiver Timon Marshall caught touchdown passes of 9 and 21 yards and linebacker Aaron Chavers recovered a Josh White fumble for a score. The Vigilantes then answered with 21 points of their own. The first Vigilante score of the quarter was a Drafts 13 yard touchdown pass to Derek Lee. On the following Yard Dawgz offensive possession, Grady's pass was tipped at the line and recovered by Chris Brown for the interception and score. The Dawgz then attempted an onside kick to get one more score before the close of the half but the onside kick was recovered by the Vigilantes. Dallas closed the quarter with another score by Brackins. At half, the Vigilantes led the Dawgz 41-20.
The Dawgz turned the ball over on downs to start the third quarter and the Vigilantes then scored on an 8 yard touchdown pass from Drafts to Lee. The Dawgz answered back with an 18 yard touchdown pass from Grady to Marshall giving Marshall his third touchdown catch of the night. The quarter ended with the Vigilantes up 48-28.
Dallas opened the fourth quarter with a 1 yard touchdown run by Drafts. Grady connected with Anthony Hines on a 16 yard touchdown pass late in the fourth but the scoring drought in the first quarter proved to be too much for the Dawgz to overcome as they fell 34-55 to the Vigilantes.
Following the game, Coach McEwen noted, "We knew going into the game versus Dallas that it would be a true measure of where we need to be in order to compete week in and week out in the AFL. Our players now have a better understanding of what it takes to compete in a hostile environment after our last two weeks on the road."
The Yard Dawgz return home on May 8th, to host the Bossier Shreveport BattleWings. Single game tickets are on sale, starting at only $10! The Yard Dawgz Block Party will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Reno and kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For additional information, please call (405) 228-3294 or visit www.okcyarddawgz.com.
