Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce that pitchers Philip Barzilla (LHP), Jino Gonzalez (LHP) and Zach Cline (LHP) have signed with the team for the 2010 Golden Baseball League season.
"Gathering a strong group of left-handed pitchers is a great asset for this team," said Seals pitching coach Kip Gross. "They give both our starting rotation and the bullpen an added level of versatility, especially during the long stretches and late game scenarios."
Barzilla comes to Victoria for his 10th season of professional baseball, which includes 91 games in the AAA Pacific Coast League. The Houston, Texas native was a fourth-round selection of his hometown Houston Astros in 2001, making his major league debut with the Astros in 2006. Barzilla also represented Team Italy in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, and has posted a 3.81 earned runs average over the course of his minor league career.
Gonzalez, a product of Las Vegas, Nevada, joins the Seals following a stint with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the Independent American Association. The 46th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Rays has amassed 440 strikeouts through 175 career minor league games while maintaining a 4.50 earned runs average.
Cline, who was selected in the 15th round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2004, comes to Victoria for his third season of Independent baseball. The native of Erie, Pennsylvania notched a 6-5 record with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association. In five seasons of affiliated baseball, Cline allowed just 32 home runs in over 470 innings pitched.
