Veterans Re-Sign with the Express

October 27, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Reading Express News Release

Reading, Pa. (October 27, 2010) - The Reading Express will head into a brand new league beginning in February, and they will do so with some key members of their defense back for another season. Matt Sola, Matt Millard, David Smith and Travis Wenrich have all signed for the 2011 season.

Sola (6'2" 270 lbs) has been a stalwart at linebacker for the Express since the Express first came into existence in 2006, but his role in 2011 may change. The Kutztown University product will move to defensive end, a position he played in college. One role that will not change for Sola is that of defensive captain a role he has maintained in each and every one of his seasons in his hometown.

"Defensive Coordinator Mark Steinmeyer and I sat down with Matt and discussed the position change," said Express Head Coach Chris Thompson. "We felt with Matt's size he could transition to the defensive line and give us a push up front. We also talked about him being a mentor to some of the young linebackers we have coming in to camp and Matt really embraced the idea."

Millard (6'0" 225 lbs) returns to the Express for his third season. Another Kutztown University product, Millard teamed with Sola at linebacker on the Express' AIFA championship team in 2009. With his size and instincts for the ball Millard gives the Express versatility from his "jack" linebacker position.

Smith (6'2" 215 lbs) has been the definition of versatility for the Express as he begins his fourth season in Reading. The former North Carolina State product has played primarily at defensive back but has also seen time at linebacker, wide receiver and kick returner. Extremely athletic with great speed for his size Smith serves a valuable role on a limited roster.

Wenrich (6'1" 225 lbs) came to the Express last season while finishing his senior year at McDaniel College. The Berks County native made the most of his opportunities for playing time in the second half of the 2010 season and will come to camp this year trying to win a starting job.

Reading Express Indoor Professional Football began play in 2006 in the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pa. In five seasons, the team has amassed an overall record of 64-20 with four playoff appearances, two conference titles and the 2009 AIFA National Championship. In 2011, Reading will begin play as a new member of the Indoor Football League.
