Central Valley Coyotes News Release
In an attempt to add veteran leadership and experience to a team that played 17 different rookies in 2007, the Central Valley Coyotes were recently assigned All-af2 defensive lineman Ed Wangler.
Wangler is a University of Oregon product, who was on the 2001 Pac-10 Championship team. He also served as a team captain for the Ducks.
As a seasoned veteran in the af2, Wangler should provide a spark on the Coyotes defensive front. In his second season for the Macon Knights in 2006, Wangler amassed 13 sacks, 11 tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles. These numbers propelled him in to the league spotlight and led to his 1st Team All-af2 selection.
In 2007, Wangler followed his coach in Macon, Derek Stingley, to the South Georgia Wildcats and posted solid numbers. He collected five and a half sacks, six tackles for a loss, and forced two fumbles. These numbers were again recognized by the league and Wangler was selected to the 2nd Team All-af2.
"I am really looking forward to coming back to the west coast and playing for a team with a winning tradition," said Wangler. "I spoke with Coach Biletnikoff and I think I can be a great addition to the Coyotes this season. I am kind of looking at this season as a fresh start; I will be in a different conference, surrounded by great athletes, and a proven coaching staff. I thought about this for a while, did some checking around, and I think the Coyotes are a good fit for me."
Through out his career in the af2, Wangler has been known as a versatile and athletic pass rusher, and he is excited about the new opportunity he has in coming to the Coyotes this season.
"Getting to come in and play with other pass rushers like Doug (Langenfeld) and (Donyell) Booker is great for me," said Wangler. "These guys are proven af2 players and their success takes a lot of pressure off of me and that is great for the team."
Wangler and the rest of the 2008 Coyotes head to training camp on March 8th and open the season on March 29th in Bossier-Shreveport. Central Valley's home opener will be at Selland Arena on April 26th versus the Spokane Shock.
