FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 8, 2003
Longtime Dayton Bomber with American Hockey League experience brings leadership, presence to Columbus
COLUMBUS, OH â The Stars are less than a week away from opening the team's inaugural training camp and the outlook for the on-ice product just keeps getting brighter. Stars' General Manager Robb W. King and UHL Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Malcolm Cameron announced the signing of veteran defenseman Tom Nemeth for the 2003-2004 season today.
The six-foot two-inch St. Catharines, ON native is entering his 12th season of professional hockey, with at least a portion of nine of those played with the Dayton Bombers in the ECHL. Nemeth has played with Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne and Cincinnati in the International Hockey League as well as two stints with Rochester of the American Hockey League.
Nemeth earned "Defenseman of the Year" honors in the ECHL on three occasions (1994, 2000 & 2001) and posted 82 assists in 66 regular season games in 1993-94. Over his 445-game career in the ECHL, the defenseman has tallied 383 points while consistently ranking among the top defensive stoppers in the league.
The blueliner is no stranger to playoff production. In the 2002 Kelly Cup playoffs, Nemeth recorded nine helpers and four goals while leading his team to the Northern Conference title. Nemeth had two 20-goal-plus years in 1999-2000 and 2000-01 and has participated in three Turner Cup playoff campaigns.
"Tom Nemeth has been a premier defenseman at our level of hockey for a long time," said Cameron. "Having played and coached against Tom I know what he brings to the table. I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to coach him this year."
Playing in the ECHL during the 90s Nemeth has vivid memories of Columbus hockey crowds and the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
"I know the fans are great there," Nemeth said. "Every time I came in with Dayton the place was packed and loud."
Last season Nemeth posted nine goals and 30 assists in 65 games for a Bombers' team that did not advance to the postseason.
Nemeth was a 1991 10th-round selection of the Minnesota North Stars (206th overall) and played four years for the Cornwall Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.
