Bangor Lumberjacks News Release

Bangor, ME- Veteran infielder Mark Burke has re-signed with the Bangor Lumberjacks for the 2004 season, the Northeast League Club announced today. The Lumberjacks also announced that they have released three players.

Burke joined the Lumberjacks in the middle of the 2003 season, after starting it with the Lincoln (NE) Saltdogs. After coming to the Jacks, Burke caught fire, hitting .330 with 3 home runs and 22 RBI in 109 at-bats. Burke's season was cut short by a hand injury suffered when he was struck by a pitch.

The Seattle native was originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 26th round of the 1997 draft out of Portland (OR) State. A veteran of seven minor league seasons, Burke has career numbers of .283-58 HR-322 RBI.

"Mark was a very important part of our late season push for the playoffs last year before his injury, and we're very happy that he will be in a Lumberjack uniform for the upcoming season," stated Lumberjacks General Manager Curt Jacey.

The Lumberjacks also announced that they have released INF Dennis Abreu, RHP John Vigue, and INF Nick Saunders. Abreu, who was claimed off waivers from the Elmira Pioneers last week, was let go to clear a veteran spot. Vigue, who went 4-7 with a 4.55 ERA last year with the Jacks, has decided to retire, and is now coaching a high school team in his native Florida. Saunders, a rookie out of Oklahoma, hit .226 in 53 at-bats last year.

Season Tickets and Pack Tickets are on sale now at the Jacks store in the Bangor Mall. The Lumberjacks begin the 2004 season on the road in New Jersey, and open at home on Thursday, June 3 at 6:30 PM at the new John Winkin Baseball Complex on the campus of Husson College in Bangor. Please call 207-947-1900 for all ticket, promotional, and sponsorship information or stop in the Lumberjacks Pro Shop located in the Bangor Mall.
