Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers snapped a 4-game losing streak and avoided a sweep at the hands of the Tampa Yankees with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Holman Stadium. Drew Locke drove in two runs and hit his 5th home run of the year to lead the offense. The Dodgers begin a 4-game series with Ft. Myers Wednesday night with a 7:00 PM game at Holman Stadium.
Vero Beach wasted little time taking their first lead of the 4-game series with Tampa. Xavier Paul led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. Locke drove him home with a base hit to left for a 1-0 lead.
That is how it stayed until the sixth. Blake DeWitt singled with one out. Cole Bruce followed with a base hit and Locke walked to load the bases. Cory Dunlap then drew a walk to force in DeWitt and put the Dodgers ahead 2-0.
Meanwhile, Mike Megrew threw four scoreless innings in his third start of the year for the Dodgers. He walked five but struck out five. Zach Hammes replaced him and tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth. However in the seventh he walked his first two batters and left in favor of Brent Leach.
Leach struck out his first batter but walked Edwar Gonzalez to load the bases. Rudy Guillen then bounced into a fielder's choice, narrowly beating out the double play. Leach took care of him anyway on a pick-off. He would repeat the feat in the eighth, this time picking off Chris Malec, who was hit by a pitch. That pickoff drew an argument from Yankees hitting coach James Rowson and he was eventually ejected.
Locke put the finishing touches on the night with a line drive homer to left in the bottom of the eighth to give Vero the 3-1 lead. Leach retired his first batter of the ninth and then gave way to closer Kyle Wilson. The former UCLA standout struck out his final batter to notch his 8th save in 10 chances.
