Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Dunedin, FL) - With the game called in the bottom of the seventh inning due to rain, the Dunedin Blue Jays downed the Vero Beach Dodgers 11-6. Though the Dodgers scored five runs off Gustavo Chacin, who was making a rehab start before joining Toronto this weekend, Dunedin used a 6-run third to take the large lead. The series continues Tuesday night at 7:00 PM at Knology Park.

Vero Beach went after Chacin early. Adolfo Gonzalez stroked a one-out single to left and Xavier Paul followed with an opposite field base hit. Cory Dunlap walked to load the bases and Drew Locke doubled in the game's first two runs. Dunlap later scored on a Russ Mitchell ground out.

The lead was short-lived. Dunedin scored a run in the first inning against Cory Wade. In the second, Cory Patton drilled a two-run homer to center that tied the score.

It was in the third that the Blue Jays opened up their large lead. Josh Kruezer doubled in Ron Davenport to put Dunedin on top for the first time. Juan Peralta doubled in two more runs and Scott Dragicevich came home on a wild pitch for a 7-3 advantage. The lead grew when Carlo Cota singled in one run and another came around when the ball was misplayed in the outfield.

Now down 11-3, the Dodgers made a pitching change in the fourth. Yet the Jays kept soaring. Davenport led off the fourth with a home run to right. Eric Nielson then reached safely on a dropped fly ball. He came home on Cory Patton's single for an 11-3 lead.

Vero chipped away before the rains came. Juan Apodaca and Jamie Hoffmann tallied back-to-back doubles in the fourth. Shane Justis singled in Drew Locke in the fifth. In the seventh, Locke scored again on Apodaca's infield single to pull Vero Beach with five runs.

The Blue Jays were threatening in the bottom of the seventh when play was supended. The Jays held runners at first and third with only one out.
