Worcester Bravehearts News Release

Burlington, VT - In a game that started Tuesday night and required 16 hours of bus rides to finish, the Worcester Bravehearts fell to the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-2 Wednesday night in the completion of Game 1 of the Futures League Semifinal Series.

Vermont jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the 2nd inning before the game was suspended. On Tuesday night, Newton's Jack Winnay (Wake Forest) singled in a run in the 1st and then the Lake Monsters scored a pair in the 2nd on two singles, an error, and a hit-batsman by Worcester starter Dylan Vigue (Michigan), who lost his grip on a pitch in the rain. With that pitch, the game was suspended and the Bravehearts drove back to Fitton Field, only to return on Wednesday to resume it. Grafton-native Tyler Nielsen (Maine) came on in relief of Vigue in a bases-loaded, one-out situation. He allowed just one inherited runner to score, and was impressive over 5 2/3 innings of one-run, three-hit ball while keeping Worcester within striking distance.

The Bravehearts got a run back in the 6th when Andrew Chronister (Shippensburg) doubled in Jack Thorbahn (Northeastern), who had led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on an error. Worcester had base runners in each inning except the first against Vermont starter Thomas Santana (Columbia) and Wednesday reliever Evan Maloney (URI). However, they left six runners on base, had a runner caught stealing in the 3rd, and bounced into an inning-ending double play in the 5th.

Jordan Kang (Harvard) singled in two more runs for the Lake Monsters in the 8th off Worcester reliever Robbie O'Connor of Sudbury and UMass-Amherst.

The back-end of the Vermont bullpen shined with Ben Alekson (Fairfield), Sean Gamble (Minnesota State), and Callan Fang (Harvard) closing out the game with three scoreless innings, combining for seven strikeouts and no hits.

Worcester returns home for a must-win game against Vermont on Thursday night at 7:00 PM at Fitton Field. All Star Clay Robbins (Southern Maine) will start for the Bravehearts in Game 2, and all tickets are $5 at the gate.
