RICHMOND, Va. (April 25, 2015) - The Richmond Raiders (2-4) fell to the Nashville Venom (3-2) 69-49 on Saturday in Nashville. Turnovers plagued the Raiders throughout the game as Nashville was able to capitalize on nearly every opportunity that presented itself by converting those turnovers into touchdowns.
Nashville came out firing on all cylinders with a solid offensive, defensive and special teams effort. After scoring on their first possession, they never looked back, giving the Raiders plenty to handle. The Raiders scored on the first possession themselves but would not see the endzone again until the late in the second quarter. Nashville jumped out to an early 22-7 lead in the first quarter, and with their solid defensive play for the rest of the game, the Raiders were never able to come within more than five points. In the second half, the Raiders were within striking distance with just over three minutes remaining in the game. However, two successive pick sixes by the Venom put the game out of reach. In all, it was the six interceptions and one fumble that would put the nail in the coffin for the game.
Raiders QB Jonathan Bane struggled under the defensive pressure by Nashville, completing 18 of 43 passes for 335 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. Bane also kept the ball himself and ran for one more score. In addition to Bane, four other Raiders found the endzone - Scooby Bryan (1), Ron Davis (3), Herb Jones (1), and Brian Smith (1). Smith actually returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. WR Ron Davis led all receivers with 4 catches for 120 yards, followed by WR Scooby Bryant with 5 catches for 108 yards.
For Nashville, QB Charles McCullum completed 19 of 34 passes for 212 yards and five touchdowns. On offense, the Venom were lead by Jordan Jolly, who hauled in 10 catches for 139 yards.
The Raiders are next in action Saturday May 2, as they take on the Alabama Hammers in Alabama. The team returns home on May 23 when they again face the Trenton Freedom for McDonald's Night-Lovin' RVA.
