Knoxville Smokies News Release

SEVIERVILLE, TN - Nelson Velazquez collected four hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle in the Tennessee Smokies (37-46), 7-3, loss to the Rocket City Trash Pandas (42-42) Thursday night at Smokies Stadium. Velazquez homered twice, doubled, and drove in all three Smokies runs.

Rocket City opened the scoring in the second inning as Ray-Patrick Didder singled, stole second base and came home on a Torii Hunter Jr. single.

Smokies starter Dakota Chalmers flirted with danger all night, surrendering five hits and four walks but the right-handed pitcher limited the Trash Pandas to one run in 4.2 innings. Chalmers stranded five runners in the first four innings and exited the game with runners on second and third and two-outs in the fifth.

Brendon Little relieved Chalmers and walked Izzy Wilson to load the bases before getting a groundout to hold Rocket City's lead to 1-0.

Tennessee had just three hits entering the sixth inning but a one-out double by Brennen Davis and a Velazquez home run, his first of the night, gave the Smokies a 2-1 lead.

Rocket City tied the game in the seventh inning as Eury Ramos made his Smokies' debut. Ramos retired the first two batters before surrendering a two-out walk to Brendon Davis and a game-tying double to David MacKinnon.

Rocket City reclaimed the lead in the eighth inning scoring four runs on RBI singles from Michael Cruz and Luis Aviles Jr. as well as a Brendon Davis sacrifice fly.

Velazquez answered in the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run, his second home run of the game. Mitch Nay's solo home run in the ninth rounded out the scoring.

The Smokies and Trash Pandas continue their six game series Friday night. First pitch between RHP Javier Assad (3-5, 4.43) and RHP Davis Daniel (1-2, 2.73) is scheduled for 7 PM. Fans can hear all Smokies games by going to https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
