VB Dodgers Fall Short in Afternoon Game

April 12, 2006 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Jupiter, FL) - A heartbreaking season continued for the Dodgers as they dropped a 4-3 decision in 11 innings Wednesday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Five of the six Vero Beach losses have been by one run and the other was a two-run decision. The Dodgers will try to turn the corner Thursday night in Brevard County at 7:00 PM with Julio Pimentel taking the hill.

With one out in the 11th, Jupiter's Brad McCann lofted what appeared to be a routine fly ball to center. But the gusty winds at Roger Dean Stadium helped the ball change course and land safely in shallow right. After an infield hit and intentional walk, Steven Gendron singled to score McCann and lift the Hammerheads to a series sweep of the Dodgers.

Both starting pitchers fared well with the 10:35 AM start time. Vero's Blake Johnson faced the minimum for three innings before an error and a double scored the game's first run. Johnson lasted through the 6th, the longest a Dodgers starter has thrown this year.

Jupiter's Jose Garcia did not allow a hit until the 6th when Ryan Carter led off with a double. One out later, Jamie Hoffman singled to center, scoring Carter and tying the game. Xavier Paul followed with a double to plate Hoffman and a single from Cole Bruce brought in Paul to put the Dodgers ahead 3-1.

The Hammerheads battled back in the bottom of that inning against Johnson. Brad Davis, Edgar Gonzalez and McCann hit consecutive singles to load the bases with one out. A balk brought in one run and a sac fly tied the game at three.

Vero Beach reliever Adam Thomas kept it that way for three innings. The off-season free agent pickup allowed only two singles with no walks and three strikeouts in his three innings of work. Four Jupiter relievers combined to keep the Dodgers off the board the rest of the way.
