VB Dodgers Drop 9-8 Decision

(Vero Beach) - Despite an 8-run 8th inning which saw four Vero Beach home runs, the Dodgers fell to the St. Lucie Mets 9-8 Friday night at Holman Stadium. All 8 runs came with two outs in the inning with Cole Bruce, Chris Westervelt, Xavier Paul and Jamie Hoffman supplying the long balls. The Dodgers return to St. Lucie Saturday night at 6:00 PM with Julio Pimentel getting the start.

The Mets used two-run innings in the second, third, fourth and eighth to take an 8-0 lead. They were helped by two-run homers from Jamar Hill and Mike Carp - the first of the season for both. Cuban defector Alay Solar started for St. Lucie and turned in five shutout innings, which would have qualified him for the win if the Mets had held the lead.

The Dodgers 8th-inning eruption broke a string of 16 innings without a run to start this season. Blake DeWitt singled with one out then Pat Borders reached on a 2-out error. That set up a three-run blast from Bruce. Ryan Carter then tripled and Westervelt lined his homer over the left-field fence. Paul then lauched a majestic shot over the light tower in right field to knock reliever Chuck Smith out of the game. However Hoffman kept the inning going with a shot to left off Marcelo Perez to tie the score.

The winning run scored in the top of the 9th for the Mets when Ambiorix Concepcion singled with one out. He stole second and went to third on a ground out. Concepcion then came home on wild pitch that made it 9-8. With the win the Mets move to 2-0 and the Dodgers fall to 0-2.
