à Former Admiral Gadiel Baez will participate front-and-center in Monday's MLB Home Run Derby at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Gadiel's brother, Javier Baez of the Chicago Cubs, chose the one-time Vallejo infielder as his batting-practice and Derby pitcher for the weekend's All-Star festivities.
à Heading into today, the Pacifics lead this all-time series by a count of 71-47. The Admirals have never managed to finish better than .500 against San Rafael in a single season, although twice the clubs have gone 12-12 against each other in one campaign.
à Friday's winning pitcher, Brett Schneider, has saved or won the game the last four times he has pitched.
à Pitcher Ryan Owens made his Admirals debut Thursday. The Boca Raton, Fla. native played collegiately at Winthrop and then Anderson University, a Division II school in South Carolina.
à Ace Martin Cronin returns to the rotation after skipping a turn.
à Cyle Figueroa was the only catcher on July 4-5, until former Florence Freedom backstop Nick Crouse joined the roster July 6.
à Brandon Pugh (no relation to Tillman) also comes from the Florence Freedom and played college ball at North Alabama.
à Chevy Clarke homered twice on July 6, joining Akins, Chris Fornaci, Rian Kiniry and the departed Graylin Derke on the list of Admirals who've gone deep twice in the same game this year.
à Akins and Fornaci both homered two times on June 29.
à Fornaci's 6 RBI on June 29 were the most RBI in a 2018 game.
à Clarke was the Angels' first-round pick in 2010 and an everyday Admirals performer in 2017 (78 games).
à New pitcher Alex Dandridge is a North Carolina Central product and a Pecos League alum (Roswell, then Bakersfield).
à Frank Valentino's 11 K's on June 30 are a team season high.
Vallejo versus... 8-1 vs. Martinez 4-4 vs. Napa
5-3 vs. Pittsburg 2-5 vs. San Rafael 4-3 vs. Sonoma
Last Time: Baez Dominates, Cronin Falters, Pacifics Win 11-4
Despite walking five, Fernando Baez kept the league's top home-run team from hitting safely in his five innings of work, and the Pacifics marched to an 11-4 triumph over the Admirals at Albert Park on Saturday. The two clubs were not scheduled to meet in San Rafael until the final two games of the first half. The home team scored once in the second, third and fourth innings. In his return to the rotation after skipping a turn, Vallejo ace Martin Cronin's day went from so-so to worse when he allowed five Pacifics runs in the fifth, culminating in back-to-back home runs for Jake Taylor and Zach Files. Files homered off Cronin in consecutive at-bats. Javion Randle also hit a big fly for the Pacifics, putting him ahead of Nick Akins Sr. for the league RBI, and all three San Rafael players who homered in Saturday's game now have eight dingers for the year. On the positive side of the ledger for Vallejo, Rian Kiniry struck his 14th round-tripper, moving him into second behind Akins for the league lead. After Cronin's rough outing, d'Aundray Van Slyke looked strong out of the bullpen, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless. Randle's home run came off Ryan Owens in the Vallejo reliever's second pro appearance.
