Last Time Out: Napa Prevails in "War of Attrition," 14-11

The phrase "war of attrition" has been thrown around by pundits to describe recent World Cup action, but it also applied to Sunday's contest between Vallejo and Napa. The game featured a dozen pitchers, typically high winds for the venue, and poor air quality because of the region's wildfires and car exhaust. The Silverados ultimately defeated the Admirals 14-11 in a three-hour, 47-minute skirmish. Back-to-back doubles by Jordan Anderson and DeAndre Asbury-Heath sealed the deal for Napa in its final turn at bat. Anderson also homered and he, Ray Jones, and Drake Yoshioka each drove in three.

Regarding attrition, Napa starter Billy Felo yielded nine runs in his five innings, while Admirals starter Eli Garcia only lasted one inning and his replacement Dalton Bernardi also only stuck around for one frame. d'Aundray Van Slyke, the Admirals' seventh pitcher of the day, surrendered the game-winning doubles and two more runs after he had finished the seventh for Tim Holmes, who only recorded one out. Chris Butcher picked up the victory by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Nick Akins Sr. homered again to run his league-leading total to 13, putting him alone in fourth place on the Admirals' single-season home run list. Akins' next round-tripper will tie him for third with Nicholas Boggan, who hit 14 in 2014, and Akins' 15th will equal his own mark of a year ago. Chris Fornaci, second to Akins on the PacPro 2018 homer list, kept pace by blasting his 10th home run, and Mike Blanke racked up his first long ball of the season.

League RBI leader Graylin Derke was dealt to Wichita of the American Association after Saturday's action...Nick Akins and Chris Fornaci both homered twice in Friday's 17-8 win over Sonoma, the first time two Admirals have homered twice in a 2018 game...Friday was Akins' third multi-homer game of the year...also on Friday, Fornaci hit the team's second grand slam in 2018 (Graylin Derke had the other in Sonoma on June 24)...For Akins, who is now alone in fourth place on the club's all-time single-season home-run list, Tillman Pugh's 18 in 2017 is the ultimate mark to surpass...Frank Valentino's 11 strikeouts on Saturday is the most by any Admirals pitcher in 2018...David Kiriakos has assumed the cleanup spot because of Derke's departure, and he's maintained an outstanding OBP (.417 after Sunday's action) but has yet to crack the .300 batting average mark in the past month...d'Aundray Van Slyke, who has pitched in two of Vallejo's last three games, made his first start at first base on Saturday in Derke's stead.
