The Vallejo Admirals lost to the San Rafael Pacifics 8-5 to start a Pacific Association series at Wilson Park as the Pacifics increased their first-place lead in the league standings to two games. Vallejo (14-9) took an early 3-0 lead in the first innings as Rian Kiniry homered, David Kiriakos singled and Nick Akins Sr. homered against Neil Lang. The Admirals led 4-2 after two innings as Akins knocked in Kyle Figeroa but San Rafael (16-7) scored three runs in the third to take a 5-4 lead and never trailed again.
Akins banged out two hits. Catcher Mike Blanke collected three hits in his first home game of the season after helping Vallejo win a title a year ago. Akins' nine homers leads the circuit with Sonoma's Kenny Meimerstorf second with eight and Kiniry third with seven. Dalton Bernardi (3-2) took the loss for Vallejo as he went five innings and gave up two earned runs and four hits. He struck out one and walked five. Lang (2-1) gave up 10 hits but pitched seven innings and earned the win for San Rafael. Chris Mazza earned the save for the Pacifics as he did not allow a run in 1 1/3 innings. Zach Files hit a home run for San Rafael and walked twice. Jake Taylor had two hits, while DonAndre Clark had two hits and one walk.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHER
#35 Luis Ramirez L/L 5-10, 160 11/27/1995 Caracas, Venezuela
Martinez makes his first career Admirals start after a grand start to the year in the bullpen, having allowed no runs in his first four outings as PJ Phillips' top long man. In four seasons as a Houston Astros farmhand, Ramirez pitched once for Single-A Quad Cities, making the rest of his 60 appearances in short-season and rookie ball. Only three of Ramirez's affiliated outings for Houston were as a starter.

The league's reigning MVP has returned and is in uniform tonight.

Vallejo's Opening Night starter has truly earned the moniker of "ace." Not bad for a chap who left baseball for a while.

The league RBI leader clocked a grand slam on Sunday at Sonoma. Napa's Nicco Toni and Sonoma's Kenny Meimersdorf each have 26.

The Admirals' hitting coach now holds the league lead in homers, one ahead of Meimersdorf by virtue of last night's blast against Neil Lang.
