Valkyries Edge Out Vegas Thrill 3-1

It took four action-packed sets for the Orlando Valkyries to pull off a 3-1 victory over the Vegas Thrill on Thursday night at the Dollar Loan Center.

Outside hitter Jill Gillen led the Valkyries with 21 total points, 21 kills in the contest. Full statistics for the game can be found here.

Set 1

The Valkyries took the first set 25-23 after a late run by the Thrill. With the score at 24-19, the Thrill scored four straight points before Orlando put up the last two. A defining streak in the set was when The Valkyries went on 4-0 run after the score was tied at 10-10. Orlando's biggest lead in the set was five and Gillen led all with eight kills.

Set 2

Orlando won the second set 25-18 after a hot start. The Valkyries started the set with a 5-0 run and maintained momentum, leading by as much as eight. With the score at 21-13, the Thrill would score four straight points. However, the run was ended on a kill through a block by Gillen. Orlando ended the set with a 4-1 run. Middle blocker Kaz Brown led all with six kills.

Set 3

After a hot start, the Vegas Thrill took the third set 25-20. The Thrill's Khat Bell led all with 9 points and six kills. Bell had back-to-back aces to help give her team an early 4-1 lead. Orlando came back and tied it at 4-4, but the Thrill pulled away again with the score at 12-11. Vegas went on a 4-0 run to lead 15-11. After a media timeout, Orlando scored three in a row to bring the score to 15-14. The Valkyries fought, but Vegas proved too strong in the set.

Set 4

Neither team wanted to lose the fourth set, but the Valkyries pulled it off 30-28. The teams traded points to start the set. With the score at 7-6, Orlando went on a 3-0 run to lead 10-6. However, the Thrill would tie the set at 16-16 and the teams went back-and-forth again. The set went to deuce and both teams showed resiliency. Outside hitter Adora Anae led all with 7 kills in the set.

The Valkyries are back in action on Sunday, February 25, against the Omaha Supernovas at 3 p.m. at Addition Financial Arena.
