Valiant comeback not enough as Ads stun Moose
November 28, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second period to tie the game at 3-3 but that wasn't enough as a late goal by Milwaukee's Andrew Hutchinson powered the Admirals to a 4-3 win over the Moose Sunday afternoon.
Wade Flaherty made the first big stop of the day, as he got a glove on a shot from Timofei Shishkanov.
Midway through the period, the Admirals started putting some heavy pressure on the Moose and it paid off. Darren Haydar picked up a Greg Zanon rebound from the front of the net and backhanded it through Flaherty's legs to make it 1-0.
Milwaukee made it 2-0 on a Brad Tiley point shot that was missed by a screened Flaherty. The goal came seconds after the Admirals went on the powerplay.
Jimmy Roy looked to spark his club shortly after the second Milwaukee goal when he dropped the gloves with Brandon Segal. The fight was a draw but it served to spark the Moose for the rest of the period.
After one period, the Moose were up 12-11 in shots but trailed 2-0 on the scoreboard.
It didn't take Milwaukee long to extend their lead to three goals in the second period. Vern Fiddler picked up a pass from Simon Gamache and fired it past Flaherty to make it 3-0.
The Moose were finally able to dent the scoreboard after Josh Green picked up the puck right on the goal line and banged it in. Lee Goren took the initial shot.
Manitoba drew back to within a goal several minutes later on a blast by Tomas Mojzis.
Milwaukee had a great chance to pull back ahead by a pair after a skirmish at the midway point saw the Moose down a man. 50 seconds later, Ryan Kesler was called for roughing to give the Ads a two-man advantage. However, the Moose were able to kill it off.
Jason King had a clear cut breakaway with four minute to play in the middle frame but lost a handle on the puck just as he approached the net.
On the play, Milwaukee's Wyatt Smith got two minutes for obstruction hooking, putting the Moose on a four-on-three powerplay.
It didn't take Manitoba long to tie the game at 3-3 on the ensuing man advantage. Sarno fed Baumgartner in the slot, who rifled it past Finley.
After two periods, the game was knotted at three apiece with the Moose up 22-17 on the shot clock.
Milwaukee carried the play for the early portion of the third period, and at one point looked to go ahead 4-3 but referee Justin St. Pierre ruled the whistle had already blown before the puck crossed the goal line.
It looked as if the two sides would be heading into overtime for the second straight game but the Admirals had other plans. Andrew Hutchinson blasted a shot from the point that found its way past Flaherty into the back of the net with 1:15 remaining in the game.
The Moose pressed to tie the game once again in the final minute but were unable to get close enough to Finley to generate a quality scoring chance.
NOTES: Jordin Tootoo missed the game due to a hip injury... The game was Manitoba's fifth consecutive sellout, dating back to the last game at Winnipeg Arena.
