The Utah Eagles simply wouldn't let the defending CBA Champions off the hook Tuesday, winning 106-96 over Yakama in Salt Lake City. It was the second straight win for the Eagles over the Sun Kings, this time at home and giving Utah a two game win streak.
Julius Nwosu, the former San Antonio Spur, gave Utah an early 15-4 lead by scoring 9 points, but Ben Ebong and Jason Forte got the Sun Kings back out front with 6 points each. Yakama came from behind to win the first quarter 23-19.
The second period was more Nwosu, who along with Rob Griffin gave Utah an inside outside combination, combining for 19 points as Utah battled the Sun Kings for the lead, which changed hands 8 times. Chris Alexander had 11 second quarter points, and along with 7 from Forte, managed to keep Yakama ahead at the half, 53-52.
Griffin then took over the game, hitting 14 third quarter points and along with the superb point guard play of Ali Berdiel, the Eagles took the lead and then led by as many as 15 points. Sun Kings Head Coach Paul Woolpert was ejected with 5:02 left in the period with Utah leading, only to have his players rally to within 6, 80-74.
Yakama made several rallies, including 12 points from Ebong, but 6 missed free throws by the Sun Kings allowed Utah to maintain its lead. Griffin and Nwosu combined for 17 fourth quarter points, including 5 big free throws in the final minutes to ensure the Utah win.
Griffin led all scorers with 36 points, and also added 7 rebounds in the win. Nwosu added 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Berdiel and Bryant Markson added 12 and 11 points respectively. Galen Young led Yakama with 23 points, while Ebong finished with 22. Forte, Greg Stevenson and Alexander all finished in double figures for the first place Sun Kings.
