Utah Eagles News Release
Rob Griffin changed uniforms but kept his lethal jumper, shooting Yakama to a 114-89 win over Utah in Salt Lake City. Griffin was traded from Utah to Yakama Monday, went 5 of 7 from behind the three point line to lead the Sun Kings to a come from behind win.
Utah started off well, with John Millsap leading the way for the Eagles. Jason Forte and Chris Alexander both chipped in 6 points in the quarter to help Yakama lead after one quarter, 26-25.
Elvin Mims caught fire in the second, scoring 12 points on a variety of long range jumpers and drives for Yakama. Harold Arceneaux, Josh Nigut and newly signed Darnell Jones keyed a 13-2 run for Utah, giving the Eagles an 11 point lead at one point, but Galen Young got hot and added 10 points to cut the Utah halftime lead to 57-54.
Griffin then took over the game with 7 points in the third quarter. Young added 6 points, but the Sun Kings defense locked down Utah, causing 11 turnovers and only allowing 4 Utah field goals in the third quarter and 11 points. Yakama led 85-68 lead after three periods.
The final period was a showcase in charity. The gift of Griffin came into play with Griffin scoring 13 fourth quarter points for Yakama. Harold Arceneaux tried to get Utah back into the game with 10 points in the quarter, but Yakama had too much depth and too many play makers for Utah to ever get closer than 17 points.
Griffin led all Sun Kings with 23 points in his Yakama Debut this season. Galen Young added 20, while Elvin Mims dropped in 19. Arceneaux led the eagles with 23, while Nigut and Millsap added 14 and 13 points in the Utah loss. Newcomer Darnell Jones had 11 points in his CBA debut.
Utah goes on the road for four games in Butte beginning Saturday January 20 through January 24.
