Utah Blaze News Release

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze announced it has agreed to terms with rookie defensive back Otis Merrill. Merrill arrives in Utah after playing in all four preseason games with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League.

"Otis brings the strong man-to-man cover skills we look for in a defensive back," said Head Coach Ron James. "He's a very aggressive player that has the ability to break on the football quickly. I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops as he continues to gain experience in our system."

"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to further my football career," Merrill said. "I plan on coming to Utah and working hard. I think I'm a well-rounded player, but I'm definitely known for my speed."

Merrill (5-11, 190, Illinois State) signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent this past offseason after running a blazing-fast 4.40 second 40-yard dash. While participating in training camp, he played in all four preseason games and delivered six tackles (five solo). Merrill also handled kickoff return for the team during its exhibition games.

During his collegiate career, Merrill attended the University of Wisconsin for two seasons before transferring to Illinois State. Over the next three seasons, Merrill played in 32 games for the Redbirds and registered 76 tackles (52 solo) with 1.5 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, one interception, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry.
