Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Michigan (May 26th) - In coordination with the United States Hockey League (USHL), the Muskegon Lumberjacks are pleased to announce that Goaltender Eric Schierhorn has been named the 2014-15 USHL Goaltender of the Year as determined by a vote amongst the league coaches and general managers becoming the second Lumberjack to garner the particular award joining former Lumberjack Kevin Lindskoug (2012-13).
Schierhorn, the Anchorage, Alaska native, recently completed his second full USHL season with the Lumberjacks posting a 26-13-4 regular season record to go with a 2.51 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and two shutouts in 43 appearances. The University of Minnesota commit's .927 save percentage led all league backstops along with making the most saves (1,352) of any USHL goaltender. In addition, Schierhorn placed fourth in both minutes played (2560:46) and wins (26) this past season.
"It's an honor to receive the recognition as this award symbolizes not only the hard work put forth by myself, but by the entire team as we pulled on the same rope together and continued to gel as a cohesive unit that eventually led to great things being accomplished," said Schierhorn. "This past season overall was a good one for me personally due in large part to the guys playing solid defense in front of me. I also wouldn't have gotten to where I am at today without the unending support from Coach (Todd) Krygier, whose vote of confidence in knowing where I stood in his eyes provided extra determination to perform at a high level and resulted in our relationship blossoming over the past two seasons."
As a Lumberjack, Schierhorn compiled 52 wins during his two years along the lakeshore, the most by any Muskegon netminder since joining the USHL, while posting a 2.88 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in 95 appearances. Also, the 26 victories and .927 save percentage amassed resulted in new USHL team single season records surpassing the original marks set by Lindskoug during the 2012-13 campaign (23 wins and .923 save percentage).
Notable appearances and additional accolades for the former Russell Stover product during his USHL tenure consists of the following:
- Earning USA Hockey's Dave Peterson Goaltender of the Year Award (2014-15).
- Skating for the gold medal-winning United States Junior Select Team at the 2014 World Jr. A Challenge in Kindersley, Saskatchewan while garnering All-Tournment Team honors.
- Participating in the 2015 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game for Team East.
