Eric Schierhorn Named USHL Goaltender of the Year

Chicago, IL "" The United States Hockey League today announced that Eric Schierhorn of the Muskegon Lumberjacks has been named the 2014-15 USHL Goaltender of the Year as determined by a vote of League coaches and general managers.

Schierhorn posted a 26-13-4 record this season for the Lumberjacks, finishing fourth overall in victories among USHL goaltenders, while also compiling a 2.51 goals-against-average. He made more saves (1,352) than any other goaltender and ranked first in the League with a .927 save percentage, the sixth-highest mark in the USHL Tier 1 era (2002-present) and the highest since Ryan McKay (Green Bay Gamblers) posted a .928 SV% during the 2010-11 season.

The 26 victories by Schierhorn set a new team record, surpassing the 23 by Kevin Lindskoug during the 2012-13 season when he captured USHL Goaltender of the Year honors. Schierhorn earned wins against 15 different teams during the 2014-15 season, including a pair of shutouts "" a 32-save effort in the 2-0 victory against the Green Bay Gamblers on October 24th and a 42-save performance in the 3-0 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks on November 21st.

Schierhorn twice put together six-game win streaks and closed out the regular season with an 8-1-1 record over his last 10 starts to help the Lumberjacks qualify for the playoffs. He then led Muskegon to the Clark Cup Final series, posting a 6-6 record with a .915 SV% over 12 postseason contests.

In December, Schierhorn was part of the United States Junior Select Team, made up entirely of USHL players, that won gold at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. He won all three of his starts and posted a stellar 0.97 GAA and .959 SV% to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

The goaltender was also selected to compete in the 2015 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January and made 18 saves over nearly 28 minutes of game action.

Last week, Schierhorn was named the recipient of the Dave Peterson Goalie of the Year by USA Hockey, presented annually to a top U.S. goaltender at the international, professional, collegiate, or junior levels of hockey. It was the eighth consecutive year that USHL goaltender earned the award.

Schierhorn is a native of Anchorage, Alaska and has won 46 regular season games over the past two years for the Lumberjacks. He is a product of the Russell Stover youth program in the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League. The 19-year-old will begin his college hockey career next season at the University of Minnesota.
