USA Hockey NTDP 5, Fargo 4
USA Hockey NTDP became the first team to earn a regulation win over Fargo this year by downing the Force 5-4 in Plymouth, Mich., Friday.
James Hagens played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring the first and last goals of the game for the NTDP.
Hagens, a Happauge, N.Y., native, started things off when he scored at 8:16 of the first, but with what became a pattern of the two teams trading goals over the course of the game, Fargo responded late in the period on a Mac Swanson power play marker at 19:10.
Will Skahan tallied for the NTDP at 1:26 of the second and 30 seconds later defenseman Leo Gruba scored his sixth goal of the year to make it 2-2. Teddy Stiga, who finished with a goal and two assists in the game, put the NTDP ahead at 4:20 before Peter Cisar's fourth goal of the year at 6:41 made it 3-3. Cole Eiserman's 10th USHL goal of the season, which came at 19:31, gave the NTDP a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes of action.
Michael Neumeier's power play goal at 18:19 of the third tied the game once again, but the NTDP went ahead for a final time when Hagens scored his second of the game with three seconds remaining in the contest.
The Force, now 13-1-1-0 for the year, received 16 stops from Anton Castro. Nick Kempf had 27 saves for the NTDP which now stands 6-8-0-0 for 2023-24.
Des Moines 4, Lincoln 1
Now 6-0-1-0 in its last seven games, Des Moines built a 3-0 lead in claiming a 4-1 road win Friday at Lincoln.
Jack Kernan's first-period power play goal gave the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead and goals from Braedon Ford and Ben Kevan before the second period was four-minutes old made it a three-goal cushion. Nikolas Young's first career USHL goal got the Stars on the board at 6:56, but Kevan scored his second goal of the game at 16:52 and after two periods of action, Des Moines held a 4-1 lead.
Lincoln outshot the Bucs 7-5 in the third period, but could not find a way to close the gap.
Eric Dahlmeir, who stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced, got the win as Des Moines upped its record to 7-6-3-0, Yan Shostak was credited with 22 saves for Lincoln which now stands 3-10-0-2 for the year.
Green Bay 5, Madison 3
Rookie forward Lev Katzin's two goals helped Green Bay to a 5-3 road win at Madison Friday night.
Madison led early in the game on Max Nagel's ninth tally of the year, but the Gamblers scored twice on goals from Libor Nemec and Julian Lutz before the end of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
The Capitols knotted the score at 4:50 on Jack Henry's power play marker, but Katzin's fifth of year, which came at 9:24, put Green Bay up by one.
Michael DeAngelo scored a shorthanded marker at 8:38 of the third to make it 4-2. Austin Burnevik responded for Madison a minute later, but Green Bay secured the win when Katzin scored his second of the game at 18:27.
Adam Gajan had 39 saves for the Gamblers, marking the eighth time this year he's had at least 30 saves in a game.
Green Bay, which has gone 7-0-1-0 in its last eight games, upped its record to 12-5-1-0 with the win. Madison stands 8-5-2-1 for the year.
Tri-City 6, Muskegon 3
Artemi Nizameyer had a goal and two assists in helping lift Tri-City to a 6-3 home win Friday.
The two teams stood tied 2-2 at the end of the first period with Vladislav Lukashevich and Nizameyev tallying for Tri-City and Patrick Raftery and Joe Connor scoring for Muskegon.
The second period proved pivotal in the outcome of the game with the Storm outscoring the Lumberjacks 2-0 on a pair of power play goals in the middle frame. Ryan Smith scored his seventh of the year at 7:25 and Cameron Briere at 8:33 and at the end of the second, the game stood 4-2 in favor of Tri-City.
Jake Rozzi and August Fallon made it a 6-2 lead for the Storm midway through the final period. Connor's second goal of the game, which came on a power play at 15:18, closed out the scoring in the game.
Storm netminder Cameron Korpi had 29 saves, while his Muskegon counterpart, Paxton Geisel, finished with 36 stops.
Dubuque 6, Waterloo 5
Including the game-winner, Nick Romeo scored twice as Dubuque rallied for a 6-5 road win at Waterloo Friday night.
The two goals are the first of Romeo's USHL career.
The host Black Hawks took a 3-0 first-period lead on goals from Jakub Altrichter (9:04), Griffin Erdman (9:24) and Gavin Lindberg (19:27). Noah Powell's second goal of the season, which came with two seconds left in the opening 20 minutes of action, cut the deficit to two.
Erik Pahlsson, the USHL's leading point-getter, scored a shorthanded marker at 2:02 of the second and when Romeo scored a highlight-reel goal at 10:19, the Fighting Saints and the Black Hawks stood tied at 3-3. Pahlsson's second goal of the game put Dubuque up for the first time, but John Mustard's eighth goal of the year a short time later, made it 4-4 after two periods of play.
Waterloo went up for a second time on a Carson Reed tally at 9:02 of the third, but Michael Barron knotted the score at 5-5 20 seconds later. Romeo put the game away for the Fighting Saints when he scored at 18:55.
Dubuque, which leads the Eastern Conference standings with its 12-2-1-2 record, got a 34-save effort from Kevin Reidler in the win. Jack Spicer had 22 saves for Waterloo.
Chicago 5, Cedar Rapids 3
The score stood tied 1-1 after the first 20 minutes of action, but Chicago scored three times in the second period enroute to a 5-3 road victory at Cedar Rapids Friday night.
Mick Thompson scored for the Steel at 6:43 of the opening stanza, but Connor Smith replied to knot the score for the RoughRiders at 13:45.
Joey DelGreco, the reigning USHL Forward of the Week, scored his fourth goal in the last two games, when he converted on a power play chance for the Steel at 1:16 of the second. Landan Resendes responded for Cedar Rapids with a power play goal at 4:18. Ben Yurchuk put Chicago up 3-2 at 6:19 and Charlie Major's goal at 8:25 made it a two-goal lead. Smith's second goal of the game closed the gap to 4-3 when he scored at 11:50.
Owen Tylec added an insurance marker at 15:54 of the third in closing out the scoring in the contest.
Christian Manz had 21 saves in securing the win for the Steel, while Sam Scopa turned aside 16 shots for Cedar Rapids.
Sioux City 4, Sioux Falls 3 shootout
Sam Urban had 29 saves and Max Strand had a goal and an assist as Sioux City claimed a 4-3 shootout victory at Sioux Falls Friday.
The host Stampede took an early lead when Tyler Borgula scored at 5:35 of the opening period, but the score stood 2-1 in favor of the Musketeers at the end of the first when Easton Jacobs scored at 7:41 and Strand converted on a power play chance at 15:17.
Borgula tied the game with his sixth of the year coming at 3:13 of the second. Brian Nicholas made it a 3-2 Sioux City lead at 5:48, but when defenseman Jack Phelan scored his first goal of the season at 15:06, the two teams entered the locker room at the end of the second with the game tied at 3-3.
Sioux City put seven shots on goal in the third and Sioux Falls had six, but neither team was able to score, sending the game into overtime. A scoreless overtime frame was followed by a shootout where the Musketeers used goals from Nicholas and Ethan Gardula to claim the win.
Urban stopped 29 of 32 shots in the game, while Michael Chambre finished with 26 saves for the Stampede.
Action continues Saturday night with seven games on the docket.
